The Pacer/Porsche 928 debate has been going on since the two cars were still appearing in their showroom debuts. But I went to a book on my library shelf; "Project 928: A development history of the Porsche 928 from first sketch to production" by Julius Weitmann and Rico Steinemann (Obin you may also have a copy of this bible on the 928) for a final answer. Alas, no final answer. But, when one uses a little bit of informed conjecture regarding development lead-times, etc, it leads to a conclusion (always mine anyway) that the 928 and Pacer's unusual-to-the-point-of-bizarreness resemblance to each other was just an interesting historical coincidence. Porsche had already completed preliminary full-sized styling clays for the 928 project by 1971. This was six years before the 928's debut, and four years before the Pacer's debut, in 1975. I'm a bit of an AMC history buff as well as Porsche, and Richard Teague's (AMC's brilliant design director) directive from AMC's management at that time was to beat the competition with abbreviated new-model lead-times, and to hustle important new models, such as the Pacer (it was a VERY important new car for AMC at the time) through the design pipeline as quickly as possible, to maintain a competitive advantage over the "Big 3", as well as keeping the budgetary needs as small as possible (AMC was a financially challenged company in the 1970s). Therefore, with a typical Detroit new-model sketches-to-prototype gestation of about 2-3 years back then, and given AMC's already-in-process Matador project for 1973 (another expensive, ground-up-new model for the small maker), the Pacer's genesis as a design would have probably occurred somewhere around 1971-72. This would have established the Porsche 928's design as the chronological predecessor to the Pacer, then.

One thing that I find interesting to speculate about, though, would be the personal factors at work behind the scenes in the world of the design fraternity. Teague was friendly and collegial with designers from around the world, and they with him. Anatole Lapine, Porsche's design director for many years, and the "father" of the 928, was very likely on a friendly footing with Mr. Teague, and it makes one wonder if a little bit of "sharing" might have taken place, especially since the two companies were not in any way direct competitors, and Lapine may have been eager to share his daring new ideas (928 was a VERY daring design for its time) with his colleague from America. If Teague was privy to a "peekeeboo" at the upcoming 928, one might then assume that he took some "inspiration" from the design, especially the greenhouse's features, for his new AMC economy car. It would have been harmless to both parties, and complimentary to both, really.

Ce qui est marrant c'est que dans le dernier lien que tu as donné (tu vois je lis) on peut lire ceci aussi (en rouge) :

Oui j'avais lu ce passage qui se termine par "based on the timing of the two designs, we consider that unlikely" (tu l'auras remarqué l'ayant lu et même mis en rouge) et surtout qui commence par "a similarity Tony Lapine later acknowledged without shame". 

Pour faire court, il a été écrit à droite et à gauche depuis au moins 1979 (car oui il y avait une presse avant internet) que Tony Lapine avait reconnu s'être inspiré de la Pacer de Teague. Cela remonte donc à plus de vingt ans. Si ce n'etait pas effectivement le cas, Lapine, Teague ou leurs collaborateurs auraient largement eu le temps de démentir ou de préciser le sujet.

simple supputation ... je trouve. Dans le même genre PORSCHE n'a pas fait de démenti sur tous les forums pour dire que la 924 n'avait pas moteur AUDI ...

enfin bon pour conclure, l'une est belle et l'autre est moche ...
